A Study on therapeutic function of arts as sublimation
Kang Kyoung-Sun

Abstract
Sublimation is the core mechanism in arts psychotherapy which differentiates from verbal psychotherapy. In arts psychotherapy sublimation has two different levels. Therapeutic sublimation in arts psychotherapy in the first stage means that artistic expression itself has the therapeutic value because it fulfills one's desire in the process of creative art work. The second stage is the time that one has a wider and deeper insight about oneself through artistic expression. The expression of discontent with reality, in other words, catharsis which is experienced by fulfilling one's desire in the process of artistic creation is therapeutic and motivates one to change. Fulfilling one's desire through artistic expression frees ego from repression and it brings catharsistic effect and makes psychological compensation for hopeless reality. The creative art work in arts psychotherapy is the confrontation between inner-ego and external-ego. Through this confrontation one finds genuine oneself and this is the process of getting insight in arts psychotherapy. Having insight in therapy means that one is aware of one's genuine emotion and taking it outside through artistic expression and figuring out what it is. Creative arts work has the therapeutic effect because it enables one to express repressed emotion and then see the real nature of the emotion objectively. The right insight provides motivation to change. If carthisistic sublimation is purifying therapy by ventilating emotion, getting insight through artistic sublimation is supplementary therapy by filling what one is aware of in therapy.
